The Great Barrier Reef is a vast array of reefs spread over 2,000 kilometres along the Queensland coast. Long term monitoring of the environment has been conducted by Australian Institute of Marine Science and James Cook University over a period of 30 years (View programs here ). Techniques include the deployment of temperature loggers to in situ surveys by divers . However as our understanding of the dynamics has matured we now realise that we need increased information about the diversity of environmental conditions at a range of scales. The sites have been chosen to allow us to build on the existing research efforts and diversity of habitats. Sensor networks will open a new window into the marine world that previously has been hidden. You can read a description of the activities here.
Presently we are concentrating on implementing sensor networks in four sites:
1. Davies Reef.
2. Heron Island
3. Magnetic island
4. Orpheous Island
