Débora De Freitas is an Oceanographer with interest in Coastal Zone Management and Geographic Information Systems. Débora received her Oceanography Science degree with  honours* from the Federal University of Rio Grande (FURG, Southern Brazil) with qualification in the areas of Renewable Natural Resources and Environmental Management in 2000. In 2003, she completed her Master of Science degree with honours** on Physical Oceanography, Chemistry and Geological Postgraduate Program from FURG and complementary studies in Marine Policy from the University of Delaware (Center for the Study of Marine Policy, Delaware/U.S.A.). debora
From 1999 to 2004 she was a trainee student in the laboratories of Coastal Management and Ichthyoplankton Ecology, at Federal University of Rio Grande, where she developed several academic projects and reports in environmental analysis, planning and management, GIS and remote sensing tools, fisheries ecology, aquaculture site selection, among others. She was also a researcher collaborator in the Estuaries and Coastal Areas Project: Basis and Tools for a more Sustainable Development (ECOSUD Project Brazil).
In 2002, Debora worked as coordinator assistant in The Environmental Monitoring Program of Dredging Operation of Rio Grande Port Maintenance. From October 2003 to February 2005, she was employed by the Environment Council of Rio Grande (Southern Brazil) where, among other local activities, she was the Program Leader of the Shoreline Integrated Management Federal Program, working with ecological, social and economic aspects of integrated costal management in Rio Grande (Southern Brazil).
From March to December 2005, she was a Visiting Scholar in the School of Tropical Environmental Studies and Geography (James Cook University of North Queensland, Australia) developing research in environmental management and participatory GIS approach. She also collaborated, as a casual officer position, for the development of a database system to support the Maximizing Great Barrier Reef Water Benefits (Water for a Healthy Country Flagship) in the CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems Division (Davies Laboratory, Townsville).
Since January 2006, Debora is a PhD candidate in the School of Tropical Environmental Studies and Geography (Provisory Research Topic: Strengthening Participation in the Great Barrier Reef Coastal Zone: Analysis of New Interactive Tools).
